Service, Quality And Experience – Finding Your DJ Company

Thank you for visiting djjohnpiazza.com! Today I’ll be talking about what clients can anticipate when selecting DJ John Piazza for lighting, music and video coverage. Topics covered will be mixing, emceeing, customizing music and equipment. My goal is to provide as much information so visitors can make the  most informed decision when choosing the right DJ company for your event.

Mixing And Connecting With Your Guests – Making Your Event Memorable

When it comes to providing coverage at weddings, corporate events and private parties I describe myself as a club style disc jockey.  I love to mix live to create the most traction on the dance-floor. In other words I mix songs live into a seamless mix to build energy and crowd response.  Never rehearsed always live based on what is working that night.

Mixing music is sort of the opposite of what an iPod does. Instead of playing the entire song during a dance set, I play the best part of a song using techniques such as beat matching, harmonic mixing and phrasing.  Those items make two song comes together without any pause or awkward silence.  Having mixing skills certainly does play an important role in being a qualified DJ however the most critical aspect of being a DJ is song selection.  Ultimately no amount of skilled mixing can replace poor song selection which even I need to remind myself of time to time.

Emceeing – Simple, Courteous, Purposeful

A major concern when booking a DJ are emcee skills.  I’ve found most client’s appreciate knowing that unless they provide a timeline with specific announcements, I’m happy to stay off the mic.  More than likely client’s prefer a few planned and purposeful announcements to assists guests when transitioning from one part of the evening to the next. Occasionally there are toast and bridal party introductions that I’m happy to announce in a spirited fashion. It can’t be overstated enough to gain a clients confidence that any and all emceeing is by their approval only.

Personalizing Events – Meeting Your Tastes And Expectations

Usually no later than a month or so prior to an event I request a short playlist of must play songs and a short list of do not plays for the dance set. This is helpful for any mobile DJ because it provides insight and a road map to where a DJ can navigate musically for their dance set. As always I’m happy to provide feedback after receiving a must play list from clients to better facilitate with the success of their event should any questions or concerns come up.

Back ground music and creating atmosphere is a nice touch and is something I provide for cocktail and dinner time.  Customizing background music for clients typically consists of requesting a few artists and genres for either dinner or cocktail hour.  These playlists can be tailored to any length of time and are prepared on a playback device without mixing. Background music is meant to provide a light auditory backdrop to an event and it’s purpose is to keep people socializing and having a good time.

Services Offered – Equipped For Success

To assist with seamless coverage for your event, I combine high quality wireless microphones, top of line speakers, intelligent lighting and tried and true mixing equipment to offer a premium DJ company experience. If it’s an intimate 50 person event or a 300 person guest count I’m happy to help make your event look and sound great with the right equipment.

An important service I provide is wedding ceremony coverage. This consists of 2-3 quality Shure SLX microphones and a 1,000 watt TurboSound ip2000 speaker system. This system provides very reliable wireless quality while delivering powerful sound that is non intrusive visually. Your officiant will sound great and if its wedding bells or the bridal march song, the sound will impress.  Along with wireless microphone technology I carry wireless transmitters by Sennheiser which allows impressive flexibility with speaker placement for any portion of your event. This translates to adaptability when providing music/emcee coverage in large or multiple locations.

Speaker quality can’t be overstated when providing music/sound coverage. QSC & TurboSound speakers are at the very top of list for speaker quality in the music and sound industry. The TurboSound speaker system has proven to be a highly desirable system for ceremony’s and small room engagements. Both QSC and TurboSound tout a build and sound quality that is highly regarded by even the most critical music industry veterans. Aside from large concert and arena technology that use massive line array systems, I would be hard-pressed to find anything better than QSC and TurboSound speaker systems for any mobile DJ company.

Providing attention to detail and finishing touches to a room is everything when making your event look spectacular. If you’re looking to accent a room to match linens or have a great location but the space needs something extra I would suggest up lighting. I provide 20 wireless up light units that are fully controllable to match any color you need.

If you have a special slide show or movie presentation for your guests be sure to inquire about screen and projector service for your upcoming event. Recently I have added powerful HD projectors and projector screens to my equipment list and would be happy to provide video presentation support paired with my sound system. Combining pro sound and HD video support is something your guests are sure to appreciate!

Smart DJ Shopping – Finding A Professional San Francisco Wedding DJ

Today I’m going to cover a few things to consider if you are in the hunt for a San Francisco wedding DJ or planning a non wedding event.  With ten years of DJ experience to share, below I’ll cover some basic items folks may want to consider to ensure they find the best DJ to fit their needs.  Hope you enjoy my article and if you have any questions leave a comment below or send me an email at iamdjjohnpiazza@gmail.com.  I’d love to help.

Sample Your Prospective DJ – Request A Link To A Live Mix

If you’re interested in hiring a DJ, one thing to consider is requesting a mix of one of their live recordings at an event. This is a pretty legitimate request. Consider this, would you want to test drive a car before driving off the lot? I’m guessing most likely.  How would  hiring a DJ differ?  This is just one thing to consider as it does build confidence in the person you are hiring to be a major part of one of the most important days of your life.

Since live mixes are usually done to meet the requests of guests and the clients, I think a certain amount of latitude should be given towards a DJ’s live mixes. On the other hand I believe DJ’s of equal caliber have different ways in which they engage their dance floor and not every single DJ style will fit every single clients tastes and preferences.  When previewing live mixes keep an open mind and ask yourself if I have my preferences and music list to this DJ could he handle it?  If the answer is yes, then you are on the right track.

Get Familiar With Your DJ – Request A Client Call

When both a client and DJ set up a call for the first time this is valuable for everyone. It’s important for clients to express what their tastes and vision are for their upcoming event and equally important for the DJ to determine they are capable of meeting the needs of the client.  Essentially both the client and DJ should communicate and determine both are a good fit to ensure a successful event.

Worth considering is actually talking with the DJ/emcee you plan on hiring before your event versus being assigned one just a few weeks before your special day.  On occasion some DJ companies are happy to receive your deposit and will not assign a DJ to your event until two weeks prior of your special day!  If that makes you uneasy you’re not alone! Personally if I was hiring an individual for specific services I’d want to make an informed decision before sending payment for my own piece of mind.  Parameter such as experience level and reviews would be key in my selection process.  My recommendation is not to invest blindly but know what and who you are getting with your hard earned money.

By nature the DJ profession is somewhat unregulated and the range of talent and professionalism spans a wide swath from top-notch seasoned professionals to the other end.  If you are planning an event that may be one of the most important days of your life, it might be wise to get reassurance on who will be covering your event months before.  Eventually it all depends on the importance of the event and what clients value.

Request Video Footage – A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

Even better than a live DJ mix is video. There is a huge take away from watching a prospective DJ on video. Not only can you hear music selection and song transitions but you now have the opportunity to see how the crowd is responding. This is gold and should be able to build consumer confidence when choosing the right DJ to go with. There is a ton of talent among Bay Area DJ’s and San Francisco wedding DJ’s but it’s good to know what a DJ’s strengths and style are before putting a deposit down.  A video is yet another opportunity to gain perspective on making the best decision.

Bringing It All Together – Selecting The Right DJ

Having mentioned everything so far the items below would be great considerations when choosing the right disc jockey for your event.

  • Live/Studio Demo Mixes
  • Video Footage (Live Event)
  • Articulate Phone Skills (Perspective with emceeing)
  • Ability To Commit (Several Months In Advance)

Keeping this post in mind I think everyone shopping for a DJ will be in good shape.  As you probably have found, more often the best DJ’s begin booking out their calendar 12 months in advance.  If you haven’t started your DJ search I’d recommend sooner is better than later when securing a quality individual.  No matter what you are celebrating, congratulations and I hope you found this information helpful.  If there are any questions I can answer please leave me a comment below or send me an email and I’ll do my best to respond as soon as possible.

About John…

Hello and welcome to djjohnpiazza.com. Here I will be talking about my story and the services I offer.  My goal is to provide the most helpful and useful information I can when choosing a DJ and how to best prepared for success at your upcoming event.

My Story – Origins

Born in San Francisco and raised in Marin Country I have always considered the Bay Area home. With all my family members being musicians, I was exposed to music at a very young age and would play guitar and sing with friends throughout high school and college. Once in college I was drawn to the DJ culture and dance music of all types. Soon dance music grew from a casual interest to a full time hobby. By 2010 I began performing at events professionally and have never looked back.

A majority of the events I perform at today are weddings however I do perform at a few corporate, private and club events each year.  Currently I have a club residency in San Francisco at Club Monarch on Thursday nights where you can find me spinning old school funk, soul and disco with a few modern tracks mixed in. I feel comfortable mixing many genres into a seamless dance set but also have broad knowledge of more traditional non mixing music if that is what the crowd is into.

One of my strengths is taking care of clients with prompt email responses so they know they are valued and a top priority. Working as a mobile disc jockey is more than just a job but a career that allows me to help create lasting memories for my clients. I feel honored at each event to have been chosen to be a part of someones special day no matter the size and scope of the event.  My number one concern when DJing an event is to represent my clients tastes and meet their expectations though music selection, mixing and tasteful emceeing.  At the end of the night it really is about if the client had a great time and it’s rare to find a career as personally rewarding as being a DJ.

My Goal

Finding the right DJ for your event can be a little tricky and the purpose of my site is to provide you with as much information as possible to be successful.  There are a lot of different factors to consider when choosing a DJ company and hopefully my insight will lead you in the right direction so you can sit back, relax and just be in the moment.
